The looksy story once upon a time.

Book Writing Challenge
Jake Pearce was given a challenge to write a book defining ‘Digital Natives’ or Generation C. Jake just felt it wasn’t very Gen C for him to write a book…it’s more Gen C to facilitate Gen C to share how Gen C are by themselves – your voice, your film! He could have made quite a lot of money doing ‘the book thing’, the old way, but he said…no thanks.

The Birth of a Concept
Jake and other looksy folk had a mad idea. What if we show the world what Gen C are like by letting them tell their own story…by creating the largest open source movie ever. …No that’s a mad dream… but so was going to the moon or flying or anything worthwhile. Did we say that – that’s the opportunity to be part of the biggest open source movie ever.

What If…
… We made the biggest film ever…with the most number of people in it and making it?
… The collaborative film that never stops evolving…
… That became a new genre of film?
… Death to the sequel long live the evolving continual…
… We can sell this film to corporate people who want to know about ‘us’ in return for some money to create up and coming filmmakers to practice their craft ; yes, that’s you…
… We could split the money between the people who put in the effort to start looksy, film makers and the people who will plant Kauri trees to save the planet…
… environmentalism could be easy, fun and good for different groups of people!!!
… ENVIRONMENTALISM COULD BE FUN RATHER THAN EARNEST AND SERIOUS?
… So the idea is we make the film and then sell the film as a DVD (when it’s small) and as the Movement grows make it the largest grossing film in history
… looksy dreams big, this is where the money from the sale of the film will go….

The Profits of Looksy
1/3 of the total money going to tree planting (the aim – the largest reforestation project ever undertaken)
1/3 going to the film makers (that’s you – so if we make x dollars – then everyone gets a 1/3 of x dollars divided by the number of contributors)
1/3 to the Looksy People who had put in effort organising it (that would be us – the volunteers (to date) and paid staff who will make this happen.)

Humble Birth
Looksy.org started off as a voluntary project with an aim to grow bigger and brighter. It is a Social Enterprise concept based on Mutual trust and Openness…looksy.org is talking to people, private investors, friendly corporates – with a view to realising this bold dream:

The largest user generated film ever made – that marks the beginning of a new way of thinking – Your Voice, Your Film, makes environmentalism fun!
